August Showcase Of Plants – With Style

August isn’t always known as the most stylish month of the year. Not only does the temperatures cause us to sweat and be uncomfortable, our plants are facing the same problems. Heat and sudden afternoon rainstorms cause blooms to fizzle out, and if they’re not fizzling, they’re frying.

You’re in luck, we’re stylish here at South Pleasantburg Nursery, and we’ve selected a great combination of stylish hardy plants to adorn your yard with. Don’t worry, the neighbors WILL be jealous.

This month we're walking the catwalk and showing of our super in style plants.

The 'Santana' Butterfly bush isn't going to cause you to cry every year when you realize you've planted to wrong plant for the wrong spot. This butterfly bush has a more prostrate growth habit and more excitingly, it has bright, yellow variegated leaves that pop out from behind dark purple blossoms. Just like any other butterfly bush, these will attract hummingbirds, butterflies and other beneficial insects to your garden!

The Shirobana is a show stopper when it comes down to it. With bi-colored bunches of flowers you'll leave people wondering if you actually planted two shrubs in one hole! Pink and White show up very nicely against a green strap like leaf. Plant in full sun for best performance.

What?!?! An azalea blooming in the summer!?!? Yup, you've got it right, and the best thing is, the show has just begun. All encore azaleas (Belle included) will give you multiple presentations of flowers throughout the year. The Belle has a fantastic flower that has both dark pink, light pink and white all together on a tropical, exotic looking bloom. Don't worry, this azalea only gets about 3' tall and wide, so you can cram it in just about anywhere!

Who says grasses have to be floppy, unkept and messy? Panicum (aka switch grass) is an amazingly formal addition to any garden. With a strict upright growth habit, this grass will stand and call attention to itself all year round. In the fall, the foliage gradually turns a bright red color, starting at the tips.

Hey, with all of that formality, why not get crazy and throw a spiral shaped topiary right in the mix? Using something with a little bit of texture, such as the Arborvitae here, you can decrease the rigidity of the appearance of a topiary. These go well in pots, in the ground and also on your cart. Get one today. Do it.
